how to find bus routes/schedules online - part 1

Feed: Surviving in Japan: (without much Japanese) : how to find bus routes/schedules online - part 1

The nice thing about traveling by bus is that many places and organizations list necessary bus information (and general access information) on their website. If you know kanji, or can navigate Japanese websites with some ease, then this how-to probably won’t be relevant to you. So, for everyone else, let me first guide you through an example of how to look up (and interpret) the bus information. In part two I will examine how to look up timetables and schedules online.

20.9 Shower

Feed: No.6 : 20.9 Shower

After hanging up the phone, I take a nice long shower, letting the hot water wash over me and rinse away weeks of sweat and grime and jailhouse funk. I give my hair a good wash with mentholated shampoo, scrubbing at the dandruff that has accumulated like loose plaster and massaging the sores on my [...]

20.8 Calling

Feed: No.6 : 20.8 Calling

I connect my cell phone to its adapter, and, after it has charged a few minutes, give Azami a ring. No answer. I call her from the landline, letting it ring a good long time, but still don’t get through. “Well. I guess it’s over, then,” I sigh to myself. “Can’t say I blame the [...]

20.12 The . . .

Feed: No.6 : 20.12 The . . .

As I’m fixing drinks for Kumiko and Haruna, the doorbell rings again, giving me another start. When I look to see who it is, I find Azami standing at the entry. The moment my girlfriend sees me she bursts into tears, and lets out a pained wail. I take her in my arms and hold [...]

20.6 Kansas

Feed: No.6 : 20.6 Kansas

Answering the door, I find the Customs man, Nakata, standing with Naila’s FedEx package in his arms. “Boncoeur, I hope you appreciate this,” he says, walking in and placing the box on the table. “I do.” “Well, you better,” he says, wiping the sweat off his face with a handkerchief. “Because normally, see, we don’t [...]

20.7 Update

Feed: No.6 : 20.7 Update

I lock the front door behind them, and go into the kitchen where I crack open a beer. God, how I’ve missed that sound! I pour the beer into a glass filled with ice, just like they do back in Beirut . . . “Beirut! What’s happening in Lebanon!” I hurry to the living room, [...]

20.5 Home

Feed: No.6 : 20.5 Home

I take the elevator to the fourth floor and hobble out. Rounding the corner, I gasp: all the flowers in front of my apartment have died. When it’s as hot as it has been this past week, the plants need to be watered at least once a day. Azami knows this. So why has she [...]

20.4 Taj

Feed: No.6 : 20.4 Taj

The taxi pulls up to my apartment building, which is such a god-awful, ugly building I’ve sometimes felt embarrassed to admit living in it, but not today, no, not today. Today the building couldn’t look more beautiful to me were it the Taj Mahal. I pay the driver and lumber out, arms piled high with [...]

20.10 Heaven

Feed: No.6 : 20.10 Heaven

I put on an album by Bebel Gilberto, go to the balcony where I sit on a lounge chair dressed in nothing but a new pair of boxer shorts–courtesy of Azami–and sun my pale, emaciated body. I’ve got a fresh, ice-cold beer in one hand, a bowl of the extra crispy potato chips I prayed [...]

20.11 Hugs

Feed: No.6 : 20.11 Hugs

An hour or so later, the doorbell rings, giving me a bit of a fright. It will take some getting use to that doorbell before it stops reminding me of that fateful morning. Taking a long drag off my narghilè, I wind the hose around the base, put some clothes on, and go to the door. [...]

20.3 Letters

Feed: No.6 : 20.3 Letters

Halfway home, I take the letters out my shoulder bag. The first one is from my ex-wife’s younger sister, Kumiko. It was postmarked on the twelfth, the day following my arrest, and addressed interestingly to me c/o Fukuoka Jail (Inside), as opposed to, I suppose, Fukuoka Jail (Outside) or Fukuoka Jail (Scaling the Wall). The [...]

SUNDAY NIGHT ROMANCE

Feed: Finding Tokyo: Japanese fashion, food and fotos : SUNDAY NIGHT ROMANCE

Over the weekend, Sho & I had a romantic dinner...at home...in our apartment...with countless creatures watching.

Creatures of the otaku-variety, of course.  Sho has penchant for collecting UFO things that tends to drive me nuts, though I must admit I cave whenever it is a fat cat or hamster.  We cooked dinner together (korean mmmm...kimchi) and then spread blankets over our tables and walls (monsters inc, hamster man, etc), lit some incense and candles and ta da!  A nice dinner that didn`t follow our normal routine.
